Blom-Singer HME & Hands-Free Speech

Before a laryngectomy the air breathed in is moistened, warmed and filtered through the nose.

After laryngectomy, because air is no longer breathed in through the nose, this process is eliminated. The benefits of using a Heat & Moisture Exchange (HME) system are well established and some of the functions previously provided by breathing through the nose are regained.

The new Blom-Singer EasyTouch™ HME System may be used by all laryngectomees to help reduce mucous secretions, coughing and dryness, and features:

  • A new, low profile HME cartridge

  • The innovative EasyTouch™ speech button for easier closure and more confident speaking

  • An integrated Mucus Shield™ occluder for airtight closure and to protect the Humidifilter from mucus secretions

  • Front and side air vents for easier breathing and to prevent obstructions from clothing

  • Intrinsic Humidifilter foam filter for heat & moisture exchange with antimicrobial agent

  • Optimal voice results with Blom-Singer TruSeal® baseplates

  • Available on prescription from 1st July 2008

A range of other products specifically suited to the laryngectomee is also available, including the Blom-Singer Hands-Free Valve (ATSV II). This easy-to-use device fits into an adhesive housing/baseplate and automatically closes the tracheostoma when speech is initiated, thereby leaving the speaker's hands "free". For individuals who need to perform manual tasks while speaking, or those who frequently use the telephone, for example, the ATSV II can be extremely beneficial.
